Joseph E Kallenbach Scholarship
The Joseph E. Kallenbach Scholarship is available through the University of Central Missouri Alumni Foundation for a student pursuing a degree in Political Science. This scholarship is made possible by way of generous gifts made by the Jessamine S. Kallenbach Charitable Trust.
Professor Joseph Kallenbach was born October 27, 1903, in Tuscumbia, Mo. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in education in 1926 from Central Missouri State College, his master’s degree in 1928 and his Ph.D. in 1939 from the University of Missouri. From 1923 to 1927 he taught in secondary schools of Missouri and from 1929-1933 he was an instructor at the University of Missouri, Marshalltown Junior College and Iowa State College. In 1939 he joined the University of Michigan faculty as an instructor in political science, becoming an assistant professor of political science in 1942, an associate professor in 1948, and professor in 1953. From the beginning at Michigan, Professor Kallenbach was known for his excellence in teaching, careful scholarship, and effective participation in administrative roles. In the late 1930s and 40s he was one of the stalwarts in the early development of Political Science at Michigan.
His diversity of interests and versatility in performance was admirable. To his colleagues, friends and students in the Department of Political Science, Professor Kallenbach was a man and scholar of great personal probity, loyalty, and integrity. He had a great impact on those close to him. We all have learned from Joe Kallenbach and are grateful, while we mourn his passing.
