Dr. Billy Hu Scholarship in Global Structures and Societies

Dr. Billy Hu Scholarship in Global Structures and Societies is available through the University of Central Missouri Alumni Foundation for a full-time undergraduate Senior in good academic standing who is pursuing one of the following majors: Sociology, International Studies, Modern Languages, Global Security Studies, International Business, World Languages, and Cultures, or one of the following minors: Modern Languages, Middle Eastern Studies, International Studies, World Languages and Cultures, Africana Studies and has completed the required essay prompt.

Dr. Hu was born in 1939 in China and moved to Taiwan in 1948. He graduated from Tunghai University in Taiwan in 1964 then came to the United States as an international student in 1967 to complete both his MS and PH.D at the University of Missouri, Columbia. While finishing his last year at University of Missouri, Columbia, Dr. Hu began his teaching career at CMSU in the Department of Sociology (1974). His legacy continued for the next 36 years of which 25 years were served as the coordinator of the graduate program in Sociology. He taught a wide range of courses in Sociology, Modern Language (Mandarin Chinese), and History for Asian minors.

Dr. Hu’s interest in serving others was prevalent. These included community engagement in the Asian community in the greater Kansas City area, Taiwan Chinese Student Association sponsor, President and a board member for the Missouri Sociological Association, University Leadership Fellow at the Kansas City Urban League Multicultural Leadership Development Institute and the Kansas City Task Force. One of Dr. Hu’s most prestigious accomplishments was being selected twice as the seminar fellow participant in the Taiwan National Development Seminar sponsored by the Taiwan national Government and nominated to receive the Byler Distinguished Faculty Award, the highest award in teaching at UCM. Dr. Hu was the first international recipient of this award and the second Chinese professor to teach at UCM. In 2010, Dr. Hu retired from the University of Central Missouri.
